Pros: On a fine February evening, after a fun movie date, we landed at Matargashti Cafe (behind Deshopriyo park). One of the BIG Plus about this cafe is that it is themed after the Iconic sitcom F.R.I.E.N.D.S. !! And the instant feeling is overwhelming as the decor and presentation stood true to its inspiration! Live music and a lavish hookah bar added a punky edge, undoubtedly. The name in itself is unique. It has a wide variety of assorted fries and finger foods. All of them are equally delicious. The ambience is superb and is a fun place to visit with friends. Hookah is also available here. Live sports screening and board games available.

Rating 4/5

Pros: Located near the 8B bus stop at Jadavpur, this little hideout will feel like a cozy den to chill out with your friends. The place is spacious and the decor, although not extraordinary has its own unique feel to it. The prices are reasonable to high. Their desserts section is quite varied and has a lot of continental food to offer.

Cons: You might find that some of the items as displayed on the menu are not available and hence you might feel disappointed. Also, to get something you have to prompt the waiter and they are not as agile as expected to be.

Pros: Pretty decent place near Shyambazar metro. The high points of this cafe are the wall decor and the ambiance. The walls are adorned with old faded newspapers and posters of famous quotes and poems. The music playing in the background is mostly soulful and soothing. The place is reasonably priced and is a great joint for students. The staff is really friendly and the service is good.

Cons: Menu is usual nothing extravagant and the food is okayish.

Location: 282, Jodhpur Park Road, Selimpur, Jodhpur Park, Kolkata, West Bengal 700068

Rating 4.1/5

Pros: If you are culturally active, then you will love the ambiance of this place. You might even stumble upon a celebrity or two of the Bengali Entertainment industry here. People discuss ideas, read books and get engaged in deep discussions. The food menu is not as extensive as some of its contemporaries, but the taste is good and very reasonably priced. Lined with books and graphic art of famous and iconic people, the place seems stooped in history.

Cons: You might have to wait in a long queue to get your chance. The place  is a bit cramped and the service is slow. So you have to keep waiting.

Location: 31, Platinum mall, Elgin Rd, Sreepally, Elgin, Kolkata, West Bengal 700020

Rating 4.2/5

Pros: Located at the Platinum Mall at Elgin Road near Rabindra Sadan metro, you could call this a bar as well as a cafe. This is a theme based cafe with a Royal Enfield stationed at the entrance. The bar section and restaurant is separated which is a good thing as smoking is not allowed inside the restaurant. There is also a hookah bar. Ambiance is good with peppy music playing in the background. The cuisine is finger food, American and European salads. Food Quality is good. One of those places where you can go for a hangout as well as for partying.

Cons: Though not overtly priced, it can get a bit high for students.

Location: Arcadia, 6, AJC Bose Rd, West Range, Kolkata, West Bengal 700017

Rating 4.3/5

Pros: Firstly, an out an out American cafe, serving American cuisine with authentic touch in the food. You will get only American cuisine and not even European one. Things like Bagel which are not available at Kolkata can be found here. The food has no Indianized version which is cool. The ambiance is very very comfortable with soft music playing. You will often find it crowded with foreigners who are chit-chatting there. Also, there are many merchandises indigenous to West Bengal for sale there which are specially catered for the foreign crowd. There is an open stage where anybody can go and perform without paying any charge.

Cons: The food quality might not always be up to the mark and might taste stale at times. The price is also a bit expensive.

Pros: A cafe with a view. The open roof cafe cum lounge provides you with a view to die for. There is a garden and pool at the rooftop. This place is not only a cafe but also a lounge. You can visit this place for a night out as well as an evening out. Food presentation is amazing and menu is quite extensive. This is also an ideal place for the party people. Sundays they have live DJ performances and you can chill without the need to break the bank.

Location: 230/B, Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Rd, Sreepally, Bhowanipore, Kolkata, West Bengal 700020

Rating 4.6/5

This had to be the best cafe in our list. Artsy is the first art cafe of Kolkata and the interiors of the cafe are done in so much good taste, that you will simply love sitting there quietly and soaking in the atmosphere.

Pros: The place has a huge collection of books, believe us it’s really huge. Secondly, the food menu there is quite extensive. Dealing mainly in cuisines around the world, the Italian menu is especially delicious 😋 Artsy also have an extensive list of different types of coffee from around the world and you would be spoiled for choice. Another interesting thing about artsy is that on every weekend some event or another is held here. It can be a discussion on ancient culture, or antique items or anything under the roof. No pre-bookings, no tickets, no cost for speaking. You just walk in and join in the discussion. They plan and post about these on their social media beforehand. Of everything, this place should definitely make it to your list!

Cons: The place is a bit on the pricier side.

So, how many of them have you visited? Let us know in the comments below. Happy Coffee sipping 😀

  2. Oh great list! I am already making lists of places to visit once I return home in September. We had visited Cafe 4/1 and while I loved the food, it was so loud that day we could hardly have a conversation. 8th Day is one of our favorites too. We spent hours sitting at Au Bon Pain on Park St. Heard that it downed shutters 😦

    1. Yes Au Bon Pain is closed unfortunately. We loved that place as well. You must definitely visit these places, especially Artsy, bikers cafe and Matargashti. Thank you for the kind words 😊

      1. I did go to Biker’s Cafe once. Didn’t like the ambience, can’t remember why. What’s the name of the tea parlour in Gariahat? Have you been to Sienna’s? I’ve heard good things about it.
