Binder – Theatrical Brilliance With a Heart

Every age has its storytelling form, and art and theatre is a huge part of our culture. You can ignore or embrace quality act in a play and imbue them with the best artistic quality. Quality cinema or theatre leave people enthralled. But with the advent of multiplexes, all things bling and materialism becoming the epicenter of our lives, we tend to spin out with hard grit theatre. Because someone who loves performing arts will understand the value of portraying their art in a theatre. There is magic of art and the magic of theatre: it has the power to transform an audience, an individual, or en masse, and give them an epiphanal experience that changes their life, opens their hearts and their minds and the way they think

And so with a thought of following all the right processes, Sarbajeet Das founded THEATRE ON YOUR OWN (TOYO) in 2015. The roots of this group is held firmly with the belief that Art is never complete without science and science is meaningful with process. They create original pieces of art which are always inspired from classic literature. Their vision towards their group is that ‘We believe in art, as artists and as people, thus supporting all pieces – race no bar, language no bar, art form no bar.’

The theatre group is based in Bangalore, India and they have already staged 100+ shows on different classics in a span of 2-3 years. Their open-minded approach has led them to create three distinct TOYO presentations:

  • TOYO Orginals – where they create our own
  • Chuski Natak Ki – where they bring alive classic literature. Catch them in action here
  • TOYO Brotherhood – where they integrate different art forms.

A short Synopsis of the Story – Sakharam Binder is a play which is based on the Chuski Natak Ki part of their presentation.

Sakharam Binder, the protagonist, thinks he has the system by the tail and he can disregard the culture & societal values as long as he is truthful. That system is the de facto enslavement of women in postcolonial India, despite the promises of democracy and modernity. Sakharam, a bookbinder, picks up other men’s discarded women—castoff wives who would otherwise be homeless, destitute or murdered with impunity, and takes them in as domestic servants and sex partners.

He rules his home like a tin-pot tyrant, yet each woman is told that she is free to leave whenever she likes. He will even give her a sari, 50 rupees and a ticket to wherever she wants to go. Everything good and proper, where Sakharam Binder is concerned, he says. He’s no husband to forget common decency. What he does not anticipate are the moral and emotional complications of this arrangement, which prove heartbreakingly ruinous to everyone involved.

The play has since been adapted and translated into many Indian languages, including Hindi, Bengali and English.

What is TOYO’s take on the PlayTOYO portrays Sakharam as a Thought more than a human being. They believe this story addresses strange and complex pathology of Sakharam, who seems to want to please his birds even as he bullies them and who speaks like a freethinking crusader for women’s rights one minute and like a philistine scornful of their devotion to him the next. Like Brecht’s Mother Courage, he exploits a corrupt system for personal advantage, and then discovers that the price of playing the game is everything he hoped to protect.

With due respect to the playwright, they have made no changes to the text in this adapted thematic staged reading. But to optimize the time, some sections of the play has been edited so that it sticks within 2 hr.

Our Take On Binder and TOYO – It not very often that you will find people who all come from their individual and respective professional fields to be coming together to form something unique, creative and artistic. The theatre is almost a dying art form in India and to see some people of this generation take up the initiative to channelize their passion and turn it into something positive is indeed a very proud moment for us. The performances are equally brilliant. The theme and its portrayal will bring out a sense of deep thoughtful insight into the life and works of Sakharam Binder. The team of TOYO has put in immense hard work. On Behalf of WeekendTrivia, we wish Sarbajeet Das and the Cast and Crew of TOYO immense success and best wishes for Binder.

We definitely recommend everyone to go watch this theatrical brilliance with a heart in it.
