Hello, Weekenders! Hope everyone had a rocking Durga Puja and Dussehra 2019! But the festivities are far from being over because… Diwali is coming folks!! And boy aren’t we excited again? Like every other festive occasion, Diwali is also about spending time with friends and family and its also largely about FOOD!

Food is an essential part of our culture and tradition and we make the best of this on special occasions. Thus to grace this tradition and celebrate the festive spirit in the truest sense of term, we bring for you a savoury and delicious chat with some food bloggers who are trulu doing wonderful work.

These bloggers are not only cooking delicious food but also, teaching us about different cuisines, the history and stories of a particular dish/food tradition, food presentation and food photography. Along with this they also provide many tips and tricks to help us cook better. They will also provide insights on how we can amp up the food scenario this Diwali. So keep reading.

Today we have with us the quintessential Neha Mathur. A very successful food blogger, recipe expert and a travel enthusiast. From being a Dental surgeon to becoming a food blogger, get to know about her journey.

Q. Please introduce yourself. What made you start your food blog/page? Please share what is your Instagram profile all about and how did your journey start?

I’m Neha and I grew up in UP. Both my parents were Doctors and had a transferable job due to which I spent my early years in number of small and medium towns of UP. I studied to be a Dental Surgeon in Lucknow and after practicing for a couple of years; I was running out of excitement. Soon after that I got a chance to travel across the globe with my husband’s work profile. This was my first rendezvous with the immense range of localization in global cuisine, the various different ways and methods of cooking, different ingredients and ways of serving which excited me a lot. I wanted to replicate some of these dishes in my kitchen but it was hard to get a good recipe. I used to try the recipe multiple times and when something turned out good, it was documented in a hard copy diary. My husband suggested, it was a good idea to share it with other people too and this eventually became WhiskAffair, a blog which gave tried and tested recipes to help everyone experience food.

Q. Is being a food-blogger your full-time profession or are do you work elsewhere?

Yes, I’m a full time blogger as it takes a lot of effort to create engaging content for my readers.


Q. What would you consider your biggest achievement so far?

When I get daily messages from my readers about a recipe they tried and it came out well; it feels good to live by my vision of helping people experience food. Seeing this vision come true is my biggest achievement.

Q. What is your signature dish that represents who you are as a cook?

I like to cook different types of recipes from across the globe; but my favourite would Khada Masala Mutton.

Q. When you post a new recipe on the page, is that usually part of your home menu or do you sometimes have to prepare extra meals?

Of course I serve the recipe I make; all my recipes are tried and tested and eating ourselves is part of the process.

Q. How do you manage your family life along with other commitments and running a page?

Since I work from home most of the time; I’m able to manage family well. Taking a break to spend some time with my son charges me for the next sprint of work.

Q. What are the top five ingredients that you would say is essential in all kitchens?

I would say Garlic, Black Pepper, Extra Virgin Olive Oil, various Herbs and of course Salt!

 Q. What is your favorite kitchen gadget or tool that you can’t live without?

My kitchen aid stand mixer is my favourite gadget.

Q. What are your favorite regional cuisines or specific foods? Name a dish you always wanted to make but haven’t had a chance to make it yet.

I like Kerala & Andhra cuisine a lot. I always wanted to make perfect rasgulla’s but that’s still work in progress.

Q. Which other world cuisines have you tried and what do you like about them? In your experience what is the basic difference in the eating lifestyle of Indians as compared to rest of the world?

I’ve tried almost all world cuisines as I travelled extensively with my husband. Each cuisine has its own speciality just like Indian cuisine. I’ve seen that most home-made recipes across the world have a better balance of nutrients. 

Q. What other activities are you a part of apart from being a food blogger? What are your hobbies?

Eating lifestyle of Indians is undergoing a lot of evolution; ingredients from across the world are finding their way into our kitchens; people are also trying out recipes from across the world. However we need to make sure that we preserve our own age old recipes as well; so they don’t get lost with time. I’m also trying to have some of them on my blog for my readers to try.

Q. Please share your experience with different brands you have worked with?

I work with many brands and it’s amazing to see innovation they are doing with ingredients and recipes to make it easy for end consumers. I help number of brands curate recipes and evaluate their latest offerings

Q. As Diwali is approaching soon, could you please suggest few dishes which will be ideal to try out during the festivities?

Mango Raita

Q. There are a lot of shoddy people on social media who either try to discredit others or stalk them. How do you deal with such people or negativity in general? Does it bog you down or affect your mental peace?

I’m in general a positive person and while I understand there is a lot of noise; I try and cut it down and focus on creating best possible content for my readers.

Q. Local Bazaars or Supermarkets – What is your preference when it comes to choosing fresh ingredients for the kitchen?

I try and source my fresh ingredients from local bazaars and support local farmers. This produce is fresh and gets sold quickly once harvested and gives the best taste to recipes.

Q. Can becoming an Influencer be taken up as a profession for future generations? How to not get lost amongst the masses? Any tips?

Yes, it can be; but it’s not a quick win or an easy path. You have to put in a lot of effort and do that continuously. Focus on your specific community and do what is best for them and don’t get distracted with the noise.

Q. What are your future plans for your page and profile? Are you happy with the way it has shaped up?

I’m pretty happy on how my profile has shaped up. There is quite a number of things which I’m working on.
