Getting to know Mandala Artist: Fernanda (@ataraxiaowl)

It is said that Art is like poetry that enriches the soul, connects one to its deeper realizations and awakens the soul to a higher perspective. In the words of the master Leonardo Da Vinci, “A painter should begin every canvas with a wash of black because all things in nature are dark except where exposed by the light

With changing times, Art is not confined to canvas and oil painting only. We now have various forms and mediums of art and we feel that traditional or digital, every art piece is beautiful. The lovely Fernanda

Q. Please introduce yourself.

My name is Fernanda. I am a mathematics educator and I draw under the artistic name Ataraxiaowl. Ataraxia means a lucid state of robust tranquillity, ongoing freedom from distress and worry, and owl means wisdom and the ability to navigate any darkness in our life. Ataraxiaowl synthesizes the message I want to convey with my drawings. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

Q. What made you start your art page? Please share what is your Instagram profile is all about and how did your journey start?

I started drawing mandalas as a way to relieve stress and balance my own emotions. The term mandala comes from the ancient language of Sanskrit and means “circle”; however, a mandala is far more than just a circle. For me, mandalas represent wholeness and inner peace.

Q. Is being an artist your full-time profession or do you work elsewhere? Is it possible to make a sustainable career out of art in today’s world?

I am not a full-time artist. I do believe that is possible to live from art since I have seen other artists doing it. However, it is not an easy path until you get well established.

Q. What would you consider your biggest achievement so far?

I think a big achievement for me is when someone buys my art or asks me for a commissioned work. You know what they say: “when one buys your art, the artist does a happy dance?” Well, it is true!!

Q. What is your signature style of art that represents you as an artist? What does your work aim to say? Do you address current world scenarios through your work?

My signature is my creativity. You will not find mandalas as mine because I really think outside the box. In my drawings, you will also find unique elements that may help you to identify my work among others.

My work aims to help others decrease anxiety and stress, improve concentration, increase creativity, and find physical and emotional balance.

Q. What is your favourite medium to work upon? And your favourite work tools?

I started drawing with gel pens on black paper and canvas. Lately, I incorporated digital media into my work, using an Apple pencil with an iPad Pro. Now, I can say that my favourite medium is the iPad. For me, drawing with my iPad boosts my creativity and allows my art creation process to be portable. By drawing on the iPad I can create high quality, print-ready mandala designs on the go. By choosing iPad as my main medium, I was able to make my workflow more efficient and my art more accessible to others.

Q. When you start a new piece of art, how do you get the inspiration/motivation it? How long does it take approximately to finish one piece of art?

Life, in general, inspires me. I also get inspiration from nature. Recent facts also influence my creation. For instance, I created a Koala Sticker to help the wildlife that are being burned and affected by the fire in Australia. 100% of profits are being donated to @wireswildliferescue. I also have been very active in raising awareness for breast cancer and depression. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

Q. Who are your biggest influences?

I am influenced by other contemporary mandala artists and by the mandala art community.

Q. How do you manage your family life along with other commitments and running a page?

Drawing is an important part of my life, and for me, it is form of meditation. Thus, I am committed to keeping creating as my heart says so. In terms of managing my time, I try to draw almost every day and do my best to coordinate all my tasks with my passion.

Q. What are the biggest challenges that you face as an artist? Is the creative block a common problem?

I think one big challenge for artists as me is to be found by people who appreciates this form of art.

Creative block is not a problem for me. When this happens, I rest and later, I revisit my previous work to rekindle the flame. It doesn’t take long for me to get the sparkle again.

Q. Which current art world trends are you following, if any?

I am one of the stewards of the mandala community, so one trend that I created with another mandala friend was the Mandalatober. This is a challenge that happens every October in the same style of Inktober. Creating this and other challenges for the mandala community gives a huge sense of joy and pleasure to me. I also follow the watercolour trend, and I am using watercolours more and more in my designs. I am just in love with the potential of watercolours.

Q. Apart from being an artist, what are your hobbies?

I love baking! Desserts, cakes, pies bright my eyes.

Q. Please share your experience with different brands/projects you have worked with?

I have worked on different commission works. One of them was to design the artwork of a music album and another one was to design a logo for a zen tea.

Q. There are a lot of shoddy people on social media who either try to discredit others or stalk them. How do you deal with such people or negativity in general? Does it bog you down or affect your mental peace?

Every other time, I face some negativity on Instagram, but it doesn’t happen often. In general, people are very kind and very polite in the mandala community which makes our online presence easier and very pleasing.

Q. Would you like to give a word of advice to all the budding artists who are trying to make their mark through their art?

Don’t stop creating things that warm your heart. The beginning is rough for everyone, but if you want to be a mandala artist, I assure you that the community is very friendly, and you will love!

Q. What are your future plans for your page and profile? Are you happy with the way it has shaped up?

My plan is to create a new website for my brand. I am also in process of writing a book of mandala patterns and tips in creating mandalas in procreate (an app for iPad).

Q. Lastly, any word for our blog? Thank you for your time!

I am flattered by your invitation. Thank you for choosing me as one of the artists being featured here.

Thank you, Fernanda, for taking out time to talk to us, and having such a wonderful and heart-to-heart conversation. We love your work and look forward to your continuously bringing more Beauty to our feed! All the best ❤
