The Lady Herself- Rana Jabeen

Q1: Would you kindly introduce yourself to our reader? Along with the genre of your photography and on which project are you working currently? What do you consider your greatest achievement?

A:I am Dr Rana Jabeen , a dentist by profession , a photographer & globetrotter by heart. I am from Mumbai ,India but residing in Riyadh since 12 years. My favourite genre of Photography is Cityscapes/Landscapes and Architecture and I enjoy shooting Long exposures mainly. My photography journey started in 2014, it has been a short but very fulfilling and accomplished journey so far. My work has been published in many International Editorial Magazines and sites including Masterclass, Eye Photography and the highly acclaimed and artistic 1x.com . I have received many awards, including FIP gold and my work has been displayed at several exhibitions. Yet , If you ask me my greatest achievement, every new image which I enjoy shooting and makes me happy with the results is my achievement .

Q2: What attracts you to your genre? Whose work has influenced you most?

A2. Urban landscapes/Cityscapes and architecture has always fascinated me. I travel a lot , even before i first picked a camera , travel was always my passion . From the beginning of my photography days, architecture, patterns lines, geometry have always attracted me . Landscapes and natural scenery is always relaxing to view and shoot . There are so many great images from a artists all over the world, it is very difficult to mention any one artist whose work inspires me. I enjoy viewing work by Isabella Tabacchi, Mark Adams, Daniel Jordan , Peter Stewart, Daniel Cheong and so many more.

Q3: Is it important to have any professional training to be a photographer? Did you have any at the time you set of your journey?

A. I feel the most important factors in starting photography are passion , dedication and patience. But yes , if you want to develop your skills and want your work to be of top quality , you do need to undergo some training . I did not have any formal training when I started , it was a self-learnt process through Internet and tutorials. But eventually , Its my opinion that one must go through some training to hone their skills and learn how to present their work better.

Q4: When you go in one of your photo-shoot which one is your favourite lens and why do you prefer it?

A. As i shoot landscapes and architecture mostly , I always carry my Nikkor 14-24 ultra wide lens . I like the crisp results it gives.

Q5: How do you as a photographer make sure that the thing, person or landscape you want to shoot looks the way you want it to?

A. One of the most important part of shooting a landscape/cityscape is researching location . When we travel , it is very tempting to shoot as many locations as possible, but I suggest it is always better to decide on particular location you want to capture most and focus on getting a good shot there. Reach much before the time you want to shoot sunrise/sunset/blue hour so you get time to scout around for the perfect spot for your composition. Also leave some time for set up and try few shots. Today an image is not just about a good shot but processing is also equally important and I give some time in post processing to get required result.

At every location , there are 2 kinds of shots in my opinion- one is the classic /most shot / popular angle and second is the different/unique composition that we can create. Personally I shoot both ..one just for my records as we all like to have our own version and second is our creation which gives us artistic satisfaction .

Q6: Can you explain to the budding photographer what makes the good picture stand out from the average?

A: For the budding photographer , I would say there is just one thing to follow-shoot, shoot and then shoot some more 🙂 . The only way to learn is make mistakes so we can learn more! I believe I am still a learner , and each day is an exciting journey towards adding to new knowledge. I would suggest beginners to keep adding to your technical knowledge and sharpening your skills . Although I haven’t received formal training , It is advisable to take few lessons if possible. Also , give special attention to post processing as it is very important in final presentation your image .

Q7: From all the places that you have traveled, which one is your favorite and why?

A: I have travelled a lot, from big cities to natural wonders …But one memorable place is Norway ..A magical dream filled with natural beauty .

Q8: A “Good Camera can make a Picture perfect” do you believe this myth?

A. I believe that a combination of a decent camera and a good photographer can together make a great picture. A right amount of knowledge and skill is needed even with the best gear to create perfect pictures.

Q9: People usually think without money and exposure they can never be a “travel photographer” what do you think? Does travel means traveling in abroad only or anyone can start by exploring their own city?

A: To me travel means moving out of home to explore , it can of course be your own city . Each place has its own history , culture , architecture and charm which can definitely be explored .

Q10: In Architectural photography what is the key factor according to you?

A: One of the most interesting factors is choosing your point of view , it is important to create a unique composition with proper light management and getting the details right .

Q11: Which post processing software you use for your pictures?

A: I use a combination of Photoshop and Lightroom .

Q12: Many of the photographers ask us where they find out about the salon news or exhibition news. Can you please give them some idea?

A: I think these days all photography related news are easily accessed and shared on Facebook , although there are different groups/ societies which handle this .

Q13: Name the last photography book/journal that you read.

A: The latest July 2019 Masterclass Photography Magazine , which incidentally published my image 🙂

Q14: Nowadays almost everyone has access to devices with which it is possible to take pictures. What do you think is the difference between a professional photographer and any other amateur photographer?

A: Its true that everyone has access to great devices and gear the days and most even make great images . In my opinion, being professional is not just about being commercial or earning from photography as a profession. Being professional is all about the way you approach your work , your dedication ,technical knowledge & expertise and how you deliver results to your clients.
