Book Club With Tania Sarkar – Pyjamas are Forgiving

Published by weekendtrivia on

Starting with a new book review series section on our blog with Guest Writer Tania Sarkar.

Books we feel are the most important element in our lives and slowly with growing years, the habit of reading good books have vastly been replaced with things such as Social Media. The concurrent result of which is that our general ability to think clearly is clouded or have a detailed knowledge about any subject has deteriorated. So in an effort to make the young generation read again, we are going to continue with this series.

About Tania: Tania has completed graduation with English honours. Then She has done Masters in Library and information Science. Currently pursuing M.Phil in Library and Information Science. She loves to read books. Although, she reads any type of book, but her main interest is in mythology. She loves animals and has a quirky and satirical way of looking into a particular situation.

Today’s Review: Pyjamas are Forgiving by Twinkle Khanna

Pyjamas are Forgiving, by Twinkle Khanna, published in September 2018 is the story of a divorced woman who is trapped between holding on and letting go. Anshu, a woman in her middle age comes to Shanthamaaya Sthalam, an Ayurvedic spa in Kerala. Here our protagonist meets with her ex-husband, Jay, who is now married to Shalini, the woman he cheated Anshu on. As the story progresses, we find out Anshu is still in love with Jay. They start meeting secretly behind the back of Shalini and with Jay’s assurance, Anshu again starts dreaming about living with Jay. She is pleased about swapping place with Shalini now. Finally, at the end of the story, she is able to decide what to do with her life- whether to move on or to patch up with Jay.

Apart from Anshu-Jay-Shalini and Jenna, yhere are other patients in Shanthamaaya like Vivaan, who is suffering from cancer, Vyacheslav and Afanasay, two Russians who want to lose weight, Javed and Anil, a gay couple from Bangalore and Jay’s “Uncle Octopus” cousin Lalit.

Twinkle Khanna has portrayed the characters really well, though she lacked to develop their stories in some places. Anshu is a woman who tried to fit and meet her husband’s criteria throughout their marriage. Her husband kept on insulting her even for a little thing like red lipstick and she instead of protesting stopped using the lipstick. And even now, though she claims she has changed, we find instances where she is still trying to please her ex-husband. Jay is the dominating man who basically can do anything to fulfil his need, be it business, be it personal needs and can leave instantly if his ego is hurt. Jenna, Anil, Javed and Jenna are the four characters with whom Anshu developed a bond and their characters are well portrayed. Though Jenna’s incident in the Spa is a bit weak and that could be better developed.

The plot could have been better. The ending is abrupt. Another thing is about the title of the book. The title is symbolic. Pyjamas and Jeans are compared where Anshu claims “Pyjamas are forgiving in nature, it’s the jeans that really know how to hold a grudge” and she chose to be a pyjama indicating she does not hold any grudge on anyone.

Twinkle Khanna’s writings are enjoyable for her immense sense of humour and sarcasm. Though this third book has some witty lines, it does not meet my expectation like the first one, Mrs Funnybones did.

Hindustan Times observed the book as “ sensitive. Humorous and eminently readable”. Goodreads has a rating of 3 stars out of 5(2,325 ratings). I would like to give it 2.5 stars out of 5.

Hey hope you guys will enjoy this new section! What do you think of the book? Will you read it? Let us know!
