Dev Deepawali- The Diwali of Gods at Varanasi
Dev Deepawali or the Diwali of the Gods or the Festival of Lights of the Gods is the festival of Kartik Poornima celebrated in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India. It falls on the full moon of the Hindu month of Kartika (November – December) and takes place fifteen days after Diwali. Dev Deepawali will be held on 22nd November 2018.
Dev Diwali is celebrated to honour the victory of Lord Shiva over the demon named Tripurasur. For this reason, this festival is also known as ‘Tripurotsav’. The steps of all the ghats on the riverfront of the Ganges River, from Ravidas Ghat at the southern end to Rajghat, are lit with more than a million earthen lamps (Deeyas) in honour of Ganga. The Gods are said to descend to Earth and bathe in the river Ganges on that day.
