Sharmistha Paul

Q. Please introduce yourself.

I am Sharmistha Paul. I am from Sodepur, North 24 pgs. I belong to simple middle-class family, live with my baba, maa and other family members. Besides that, I love to be around with cats and dogs.

Q. What made you start your art page? Please share what is your Instagram profile is all about and how did your journey start?

I can remember that I started my art page on Instagram named on 5th December 2018 .basically I started my art journey from 2016 after my 10th class board exam. I used to make doodles at first, and I used to post those on Facebook. From there I got a lot of appreciation and that motivated me to create more. This way happened all and one day I thought to create a page for my own artwork. From August 2019, I started digital painting. I never thought that I would progress in digital painting soon. So now I am totally into illustration. But I will also try to fetch my old art styles too.

Q. Is being an artist your full-time profession or do you work elsewhere? Is it possible to make out a sustainable career out of art in today’s world?

I am not a full-time artist. I am a college student. I am pursuing BCA 2nd year. Art has become my passion now. I manage some time to create art within my all hectic study schedule.

If u ask me that is it possible to make a sustainable career out of art in today’s world then I would say yes, of course, it is possible. Nothing is impossible until you try it. To make a career in art you need to have enough potential and most important is patience. Making a good career in art requires a lot of time. It cannot happen overnight. Becoming a professional artist takes a lot of dedication, hard work, unique thoughts and imaginations. So having all of these can help you make a career out of art.

Q. What would you consider your biggest achievement so far?

If you talk about my biggest achievement so far then it is all the supports what I got from people on social media and my friends, family etc. people share my arts, they want to buy it, they confess that they can relate with my illustrations. A lot of people are getting to know me for my art. So I think all of these things are a huge achievement for me.

Q. What is your signature style of art that represents you as an artist? What does your work aim to say? Do you address current world scenarios through your work?

Basically I love to make a different type of illustrations but I mostly make aesthetic digital illustrations based on everyday life, situation and different moods and vibes. This is my signature art style. People say that my art is similar to the lo-fi art style. Lo-fi art is actually an aesthetic art style that defined by the inclusion of elements normally viewed as undesirable in professional contexts. My art is basically is like when realism meets surrealism. It’s like sometimes we dream about to live life the way we want but it’s not possible to match those dreams with real life, because real life is very much hard. So I try to depict by merging those dreams, moods and vibes with everyday life through my art that people can relate to their desire and thoughts.

And yes I also address the current scenarios through my art because this world need art and artist. To make people aware of the present situation is very much important . and I think art is a great medium to spread those awareness. So yes I also create art for this purpose and I should .

Q. What is your favourite medium to work upon? And your favourite work tools?

I do a mobile drawing. I find it very comfortable to draw. Most of the people own a touchable cell phone and there are a lot of mobile drawing applications are there in play store. So it is a big privilege to draw anywhere anytime we want. I draw on mobile using my fingers on the mobile screen. Maybe it sounds tough but practice can make you perfect. I use Autodesk sketchbook application for all my illustration. I also love to do Ink art

Q. When you start a new piece of art, how do you get the inspiration/motivation it? How long does it take approximately to finish one piece of art?

Inspirations are all I get from my surroundings, and present situation and incidents. And the most important thing is that I love to observe, I love to see those little details in everything. This observation also inspires me to create a new piece of art and you can see those details I put in my art inspired by my observations. I took a lot of time to finish a piece of work, I don’t know it is a good or bad habit for an artist but for art depends on my mood and my thoughts. Sometimes it took 2 hours to complete an illustration and sometimes it took 2 days to complete art. So it totally depends on such things I have mentioned.

Q. Who are your biggest influences?

My biggest influences are all those artists whose work make me feel I should not stop creating new things. I can’t take any one name because I adore all those artists who are have different type of art style and thoughts.

Q. How do you manage your family life along with other commitments and running a page?

Well yes! It’s a bit difficult to run a page by managing the time of daily life but the important thing is if we want we can do anything. My love for my art has made it easy to manage everything.

Q. What are the biggest challenges that you face as an artist? Is creative block a common problem?

Biggest challenges I faced when I take order of commission artwork from any client. It’s a challenge for me to satisfy them with my artwork, to match their requirements and make them happy with the art. It’s a bit challenging to complete it on time. But somehow I manage to do all these things. And sometimes creative block happened so that time I stop taking commission work.  Artist blockage is a very common issue. All artist have to face this. Sometimes it’s totally ok to take a break from the regular schedule and grab some ‘you time’, spend some time with yourself, just go against the flow, and explore other new ideas, do some fun activities, finish the unfinished work. All these can help you to overcome the creative blockage.

Q. Which current art world trends are you following, if any?

I have done some art challenges which are very trendy on Instagram like #toonmechallenge #sixfanartchallenge etc. I found these very interesting .

Q. Apart from being an artist, what are your hobbies?

Before starting the art journey I was into photography. I used to click photos .  I still click photos when I travel anywhere . I carry my camera with me and capture those precious moments of different places. I love to explore new places and new type of foods. Apart from art these all are my hobbies.

Q. Please share your experience with different brands/projects you have worked with?

Sometime I do freelance art . I worked for so many  NGOs , some  wedding photography brands, YouTube music channels, worked with some famous and well known photographers . Got changes to do some collaboration work with them. Those experiences are amazing to work on different projects. I learned a lot from that.

Q. There are a lot of shoddy people on social media who either try to discredit others or stalk them. How do you deal with such people or negativity in general? Does it bog you down or affect your mental peace?

Some people are there who steal other’s art and post on their own timeline without mentioning the real artist.  I have seen such things on social media . Such Facebook pages also doing it rapidly . I was really disturbed  with this activities ,most of the day I found some post where  someone is using my work without giving me any credit . now I don’t really waste my time on it because it is not possible for me find out all the those people who have done it so it’s better to mind in my upcoming new work. Now I am kind of used to it o see to such things on social media. It doesn’t  affect my mental peace anymore. And one more  thing which is is I hate that is ‘asking for free art’. Stop asking for free art .People should understand that art is expensive. If they respect the art then they have to pay for the hard work of that artist. Nothing is free in this world .

Q. Would you like to give a word of advice to all the budding artists who are trying to make their mark through their art?

For those budding artist who are newly learning  ,I want to say that social media likes cannot judge your talents and try to deal with the healthy criticism. Don’t lose your hope and patience . work hard on your imagination power more than your skills . Because only skills can’t make u an artist if u don’t have another level of imagination and that’s what will make u different from other people. And the last thing is try to be  kind and support to the other artists as well

Q. What are your future plans for your page and profile? Are you happy with the way it has shaped up?

still I did not make any plans. I will go with the flow. And yes I am happy to see people are loving my art page , they are supporting me a lot.

Q. Lastly, any word for our blog? Thank you for your time!

Many good wishes for your blog. THANK YOU !
