Q. Please introduce yourself.
I was born & raised in Mumbai, India. I moved to the US for four years to complete my undergraduate studies in Finance after which I moved back to Mumbai for a few years before finally making the move to Toronto with my husband (Rishin).
Q. Is YouTube and Instagram your main profession, or do you work elsewhere? How has moving from Mumbai to Toronto affected your lifestyle?
Yes, it is. My lifestyle has pretty much stayed the same except with a lot more work-life balance and a lot more time to spend with Rishin which is literally my favourite thing to do.
Q. What inspired you to start your Instagram page? Please share what is your Instagram profile all about and how did your journey start?
I always loved makeup and was forever curious about everything beauty. At my university I was part of the Raas team and would do my entire teams makeup (really badly now that I think about it) for all our competitions. When I moved back to India I was working in our family business which gave me the flexibility to go to beauty school after which I started posting certain looks I created on my classmates on Instagram. People were loving them and started asking me to do more, which is what really pushed me to start my YouTube channel & switch up my Instagram page from my personal profile to “MAKEUPBY_ANKITA”. Sharing has always been fun and now that I am 3-4 years into it, the behind the scenes work that goes into making a video or sharing a look has become one of my most favourite things about my job! I love working with my camera, trying out new angles, learning new editing tricks, just everything about the content creation process!
Q. What would you call your biggest achievement so far? What is your mantra to becoming successful?
Every brand that approaches me to work with them or appreciates my content enough to send me their products is an achievement for me. So is every single comment from my audience who loves my work. Reading how much they love a look or appreciate my tutorials makes me very happy and makes all my hard work worth it.
As for my mantra, I believe that what is meant to be yours will come to you by hook or by crook, so keep calm and trust in the process.
Q. What would you say is the biggest challenge you face being in the beauty industry which is already saturated with so many other influencers? Do you believe that there is room for everyone?
I want to believe there is but that is just wishful thinking I guess.
The challenges keep changing, firstly it was learning how to actually create good content – working the camera, figuring out lighting, learning the editing
And the biggest challenge is to keep at it, you are in this alone with no colleague to compare your notes with and no boss to guide you.. the road is very lonely at times and for months or years at a stretch you might not receive any results which can be very scary if you are doing this full time. Staying positive through that and continuing to be creative in those times is tough but you have got to keep the bigger picture in mind and trust in the process.
Q. Is there any basic thumb rule when it comes to makeup? Or is it totally a matter of personal choices?
Nail your base routine, the rest will fall into place!
Q. How do you manage your family life along with running an Instagram page and YouTube channel?
I do it full time and I have an amazing support system in Rishin (who is basically my only family in Toronto) which makes this super easy for me! Like really, easier than it should be and I so grateful for that!
Q. Please share your experience with different brands you have worked with?
Honestly not much to say here! Luckily everyone I have worked with has been super sweet and it’s been such a pleasure!
Q. India is a land of different festivals and occasions and if you had to suggest following some basic tips/brands with which one could glam up for these occasions what would it be?
If you are not that interested in learning makeup but you still need to socialize and therefore look good, a neutral smoky eye paired with a lipstick matched to your outfit will become your BFF!
Q. Would you kindly share your favourite video/look ideal for the upcoming Dussehra and Diwali celebrations?
I will be posting this to my Instagram page, so watch out for it!
Q. There’s a lot of shoddy people on social media who either try to discredit others or stalk them. How do you deal with such people or negativity in general? Does it bog you down or affect your mental peace?
BLOCK! I have no place for negativity in my life.
Q. “Social media and Influencers creates a fake world and it is affecting the youth in a wrong way” – is this a myth or there’s truth behind it? Your thoughts?
It’s not just influencers, it is everyone on social media. I like to think of it as “selective sharing” – people always share the positives which seems to create this kind of an illusion of bliss but I think literally everyone is aware now that life is not always as it seems or as it is shown rather. If you are on social media it is for one of these two reasons – sharing or stalking, so they are getting what they are in it for.
People are always talking about how social media is wrong and is affecting the youth in the wrong way (which I agree to a certain extent) but I like to see the positives of how the world has become accessible for literally everyone who just has a phone, the
Q. What other activities are you a part of apart from your job and as an Influencer? What are your hobbies?
Dancing and Diving.. equally passionate about both!
Q. Can becoming an Influencer be taken up as a profession for future generations? How to not get lost amongst the masses? Any tips?
100% yes! It can so long as you can keep up your authenticity and the trust of your followers. So many influencers have already taken over campaigns for which originally only celebrities were considered. It just makes more sense to me as a consumer even because that person is not endorsing something only for the money, they’re doing it because they trust in the product or service.
Tip: Be authentic, be yourself. Don’t sell out for short term gain, always keep the big picture in mind!
Q. What future plans do you hold for your page?
I guess you’ll see 😉
Q. Lastly, any word for our blog? Thank you for your time!
It is very interesting and you’ll are doing a great job! Wish you all the luck and success for it in the future <3
